SMPN 2 Bandar Lampung is  established in 1955 by decision of ministry of education and culture no.2705/B.III/1955 dated July 21st , 1955. The school was initially as SMPN 2 Tanjungkarang. In 1997 the name was changed into SMPN 2 Bandar Lampung.
In 50 years, the school has been led by 4 headmaster successfully, they are R. Prayitno as the first headmaster in 1955-1965, Murhan Yasin as the second headmaster in 1965-1992, Drs. Sukirman as the third headmaster in 1992-2002, and Drs. H. Sartono as the fourth headmaster from 2002 up to now.
In its development SMPN 2 Bandar Lampung has developed value of discipline, orderliness, and quality in the process of learning. As the result, the school is able to graduate alumni with excellent academic competence and achievement in the scope of Bandar Lampung municipality and in Lampung Province.
Today, SMPN 2 Bandar Lampung is equipped with facilities such as 18 classrooms, a library, a science laboratory, a language laboratory and a computer laboratory. There are 516 students in 16 common classes and 2 accelerated classes. There are 53 teachers consisted of 48 subject searchers and 4 counselors with 91% of them are graduates of universities and more than 10 years of teaching experience.
Based of the achievement of SMPN 2 Bandar Lampung, the directorate general of elementary and high education decided to allow this school to run an acceleration learning program starting from academic year of 2002/2003.
As an outstanding school in Lampung province, SMPN 2 Bandar Lampung has realized a lot of achievement academically and non-academically. This can be seen through the rank of score average of national examination in Bandar Lampung or Lampung Province, though we admit that it is still difficult for us to be included in the big 50 of qualified school in national level. Therefore, the school is obsessed and sets it vision to be one among the 50 most qualified schools in Indonesia.
In non-academic achievement, this school has a lot of of achievement in extracurricular competitions such as in sport, art, scouting, red cross, and other student’s competitions.

In the era of education decentralization and school autonomy, recently SMPN 2 Bandar Lampung, starting from academic year 2007/2008 is given a chance to run pioneering of International Standard School Programme. The trust of Directorate General of Elementary an Junior High School gives motivation and challenge or the whole  school’s stake holder to gain a better result
In the near future, this school is going to move to a new wider area and new building, located on Jln. Pramuka Rajabasa. The new relocation obviously provides better facilities for learning.
The harmonious relationship, good cooperation and commitment among students, teachers, staffs, school committee, and the whole stake holder will bring us to glorious days through the achievement of school’s vision and missions.
